LASIK Technology
Technology improves on an almost daily basis in all sorts of fields, including LASIK. Since its initial approval by the Food and Drug Administration in 1998, LASIK technology has changed and improved to allow patients who were not candidates ten years ago to now undergo alternative procedures, such as IntraLase.
Some of the different tools used to give patients improved vision include:
- VISX/AMO CustomVue – When AMO acquired VISX, Inc. in 2005, they acquired technology that included the CustomVue wavefront-guided laser treatment for correcting vision. This excimer laser uses technology that conserves as much corneal tissue as possible, cuts down on treatment time and minimizes the thermal effects of the laser directly on the eye during surgery.
- Bausch & Lomb Zyoptix – The Zyoptix laser system by Bausch & Lomb includes the advantages of precise placement of the laser pattern, a wider treatment zone to minimize glare and halo risks, and one of the most advanced active eye tracking systems in the industry.
- Alcon LADARVision CustomCornea –The LADARVision 4000 laser is incredibly fast, and the laser beam itself is extremely small, which allows sculpting of the cornea in an area of less than 1 mm. CustomCornea procedures allow treatment of both lower and higher order aberrations using wavefront technology.
- Allegretto Wave – Allegretto Wave was approved in 2003 and was the first new laser in five years. It is known for its speed and safety, as well as the high success rate. Over 90 percent of patients treated with the Allegretto Wave laser report they see better after treatment than before. Allegretto Wave uses PerfectPulse Technology, which helps to deliver controlled bursts of laser energy for very accurate levels of vision correction.

These are just some of the different ways that lasers used for vision correction technology have advanced. There are others that are not on this list.
