LASIK Results: What to Expect

Hundreds of thousands of people throughout much of the world have achieved freedom from glasses and contact lenses with LASIK surgery. As LASIK technology and eye surgeon skills improve, positive results from LASIK continue to grow. However, because LASIK is an elective procedure, it is important to remember that you have other options, including glasses, which can also provide clear vision. Still, for people who want a solution that offers a life free of eyewear, LASIK offers very promising results.

LASIK Results from the American Academy of Ophthalmology

The American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) conducted an extensive study of over 60 reports on LASIK results worldwide. The findings of this study conclude:

  • In all 64 studies it was found that a median of 92 of people with myopia and myopic astigmatism achieved vision within two diopters of the target range
  • In the same studies, it was found that people with hyperopia and hyperopic astigmatism achieved vision within one diopter of the target range
  • In 22 of the studies it was found that a median of 89 percent of people with high myopia achieved vision of 20/40 or better. This percentage went up to 94 percent for people with moderate levels of myopia, and 99 percent for people with low levels of myopia

Studies reported in the Journal of Cataract and Refractive Surgery confirmed the findings of the AAO, stating that patients with lower level refractive errors tend to achieve better results, often exceeding 20/20 vision with LASIK. That same study also showed that satisfaction rates among LASIK patients was over 95 percent.

The results of LASIK are not guaranteed, but with new methods and an increasing understanding of the best ways to reshape your cornea, the odds are considerably in your favor for positive results.
