There are several lasers that have been approved by the FDA for use in LASIK surgery. While all of these lasers can provide a successful outcome, not every laser is ideal for each patient. Your ophthalmologist will work with you to determine what LASIK technology will best provide you with the clear vision you deserve.
The two main lasers used in LASIK procedures are:
Both spot and slit scanning lasers can utilize wavefront technology. Wavefront technology maps defects in the eye’s optical system and guides the laser to provide the most precise correction possible. Not all systems are designed to work with wavefront technology, but most ophthalmologists now offer some sort of wavefront guided LASIK procedure. Wavefront procedures are also known as custom LASIK, and have the highest rate of providing 20/20 vision or better.
When you visit your ophthalmologist for a LASIK evaluation, ask questions about the type of laser they recommend. It is okay to do research on your own to determine what type of laser you are interested in, but trust your eye doctor’s recommendations when it comes to the final decision.
