The Katzen Eye Group serves the Baltimore, Lutherville, and Towson areas of Maryland and offers:

We have 16 highly-qualified physicians including ophthalmologists and optometrists. Our growth has been dramatic, as in the beginning, our office consisted of Dr. Katzen, his secretary, and his father-in-law, the only patient. Now Katzen Eye Group is the largest private eye care practice in the state and we have served the Baltimore Metropolitan area for forty years.
Our approach is to combine a warm and friendly a™osphere with the latest and best medical treatments to provide care for the whole person. This is a “High Tech, High Touch” practice and you will be welcomed as soon as you arrive at our door.
Pioneering Work
In addition to our tradition of caring, we also have a pioneering tradition and we continue to set eye care standards by working together as board-certified ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians.
- We were the first ophthalmology practice in Maryland, and one of the first in the country, to use intraocular lens implants (IOLs)
- Our doctors were among the first in the nation to use phacoemulsification (called “phaco”) in removing cataracts – that is the use of ultrasound to break up the cataract for easy removal.
- In the U.S., we were the first to use the YAG laser for eye care, removing scar tissue after cataract surgery; this is now the standard approach worldwide.
- Dr. Leeds Katzen was one of the first physicians in the nation to correct nearsightedness (myopia) using radial keratotomy, and that was a significant step in the development of LASIK.
Missionary Work
We have participated in many international missionary efforts, such as in:
- Guyana – where Dr. Leeds Katzen and his son Dr. Brett Katzen headed a team of eye care specialists in Project DAWN (Donors and Workers Now). In just a few weeks they examined and treated hundreds of patients who otherwise would have had no treatment.
- Cuba – where a group of physicians sponsored by the City of Baltimore’s Mayor’s Office spent time sharing ideas with other doctors and performing eye surgeries on local people.

Leeds E. Katzen, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Leeds Katzen specializes in Consultative Ophthalmology. He was the founder of Katzen Eye Group more than 30 years ago and has seen the practice grow and prosper. At the beginning, he set a tradition of excellence in total eye care for every patient and you will find that tradition still being followed. |
Brett W. Katzen, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Brett Katzen is the son of Dr. Leeds Katzen and specializes in cataract surgery, laser vision correction, and anterior segment ophthalmology. |
Peter T. Lapinsky, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Lapinsky has been with Katzen Eye Group since 1984 and specializes in cataract surgery, laser vision correction, and anterior segment ophthalmology. He is also an Assistant Clinical Professor at the University of Maryland School of Medicine. |
Donna G. Booth, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Booth joined Katzen Eye Group in 1994 as an associate physician. She specializes in cataract surgery, anterior segment ophthalmology, and dry eye services. |
Richard A. Adler, M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Adler is the Director of Aesthetic Services at Katzen Eye Group and has advanced training in non-surgical cosmetic procedures. He also specializes in laser vision correction and in corneal, refractive and external disease. |
Tania S. Marcic, M.D. Dr. Marcis joined Katzen Eye Group in 2007. She specializes in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and has created many presentations and papers on that subject. |
Emily P. MacQuaid-McCartney, M.D. Dr. MacQuaid-McCartney joined Katzen Eye Group in 2008 as a specialist in reconstructive and aesthetic eyelid and facial plastic surgery, and in cosmetic services. She has advanced training in BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers. |
Joseph B. Harlan, Jr., M.D., F.A.C.S. Dr. Harlan joined Katzen Eye Group in 2009 as the Director of Retinal Services. He specializes in the medical and surgical management of vitreous and retinal disease. |
